Never want to see a spray gun again!

So this weekend just gone was the final paint session (or so we thought) on the Land Rover. We bravely earlier in the week moved the Landy over to a barn at a local farm, the engine is running like a dream which is good news as it hasn't been run for months. We had to built a spray booth in the barn using a gazebo frame and loads of clear plastic all ready for the big spray up on Saturday.

Things don't go to plan.
Firstly temperatures plummeted in Oxfordshire last week not ideal for painting but we ingeniously sourced some oil radiators and made the spray booth mildly tepid to to hopefully help the paint go off a bit quicker.
New paint was ordered as we had run out of the Deep Bronze Green we had used for the previous spray up and a delay with the courier had us worried however at the eleventh hour on Friday it arrived a big relief. A very early start on Saturday masking up getting ready to spray went well, so as we started to stir the new paint which looked did look a bit different to the last batch but with closer inspection we discovered that the paint sent was Bronze Green and not Deep Bronze Green the wrong colour.(there is a difference we weren't just being pedantic) So with a fully prepped exterior waiting for it's final coat of paint we had no choice but to change its final colour to Bronze Green arghhhhh not ideal.

It turns out we love Bronze Green and now prefer it to the Deep Bronze Green we sprayed before so that's lucky however the finished interior is in you guessed it DBG so we are now gonna have to set a date in the spring when it's a bit warmer to respray that the same colour as the exterior. Despite the temperature the paint job looks pretty good and I am pleased with the finish not too peely and just a few runs less than the Olympics but nothing a bit of polishing won't sort out. It was just our luck though when with less than 2 minutes of spraying left to go on the roof the compressor packed up! Oh dear we said (or maybe something a bit more fruity like bother) an hour and a half later a compressor in bits and back together with no joy and a run half way around the village, twice, we managed to track down the farmer and borrow a compressor to finish the the job off phew! disaster averted. Have a look at the pics and let me know what you think of the new colour I think it looks great!

So busy busy we will be now as we aim for a November ish finish on this project loads to do mostly refitting cleaned up parts, replacing rubbers etc and a small spot of welding before the dreaded MOT.

All its new shiny Bronze Green Glory.

The engine bay looks much better but needs some touching up, the keen eyed amongst you will have spotted the different colour in the cab.
At least the rear tub interior and exterior match, the red and black strip you can see inside is believed to be a modification made from when this Landy was in the fire service we though we would keep it as a little folly.

Shortly before the compressor died!
Note home made spray booth on LHS nice.

Winter Project No 1

Yes another bicycle!
This ladies loop frame bicycle is a Hopper (Pre Elswick I think) and believed to be 1927-1930. I am going to do a full strip down and repaint and re tune, it is in reasonable condition so hopefully it won't take too long as I also have another bicycle to get on with as well.....a low gravity tradesman's bicycle! pictures to come soon, in the mean time have a look at the loopy.

Back to Englefield.

Last night we were back at Englefield to continue with preps for the forthcoming boiler test and steam up. Myself and Stiggy set to cleaning up and painting the top of the boiler, Ben set to re-seating and packing the blow down and shut off taps for the water gauges whilst Fred set to the big end on the Ransomes steam engine, the big end requires a few thou reaming off to take up a bit of play so it had to come to pieces to take the bearing out and back to the workshop for the work to be done. Hopefully this weekend she will be back together and nearly ready for the steam up.

All done, put the kettle on.

Ben hard at it.

Fred drawing the key out the big end.

Big end apart.

Brew up!

Boiler Preparations at Englefield

In preparation for the end of year steam up at Englefield a small team led up by Fred Copper set to cleaning out the massive Cornish boiler which provides the steam for the two steam engines at the saw mill. Soot needed cleaning out from the air chambers and outer boiler skin also limescale needed scraping out of the internals of the boiler, below are some shots of the progress.

Me going into the one of the air chambers.

Yes that's me squeezed into the sooty air chamber, the outer of the boiler is on my right.

Me coming out!

Should have worn gloves....nah

I'm not quite as mucky as Fred! I think he thought it was a compettion to see who could look most like a chimney sweep.

Ben, those overalls were white!

Fred's daughter Pippa, she's not having a kip she's cleaning out the fire grate.

Inspecting the ash pan.

Yep that is me upside down scraping inside the boiler, normally this would be full of water and steam.

Inside again.

Can you guess which one of these people haven't been in the boiler?

Monthly Meet at the Fox, Steventon

Great turn out at the Fox this month I counted twenty two cars at one point. Whilst chatting to a car owner he mentioned a new car meet on the last Saturday of every month at The Bell pub, Aldworth near Streatley sounded good might be worth checking out if you are free.
